The usual way to explain what is the "landscape" is an "overview of a natural geographic area". In his "Philosophy of landscape", Simmel asks a simple question: Is the landscape a sum of disparate elements, or a unit that has an atmosphere or a mood, or, in other words, is Nature a unified whole or not? By defining the landscape, we then define the nature as well. But can we thus deduce that the question of its own independent standards are evacuated?

Texts and images contained in this publication are adapted from a debate series entitled "Landscape as an artistic variation" organized by the contemporary art center La Maréchalerie and the National Graduate School of Landscape Architecture of Versailles. Those contributions question the "landscape" as a contemporary concern of architects, theorists, artists, as well as users of the territory.
